Triumph In Sydney

The boat that we're going for our next cruise on was in Sydney on Wednesday so we went in to see it. I forgot my camera, but the cape breton post took a picture of it for me. How nice of them. It's not a very big picture, but it'll give you a hint of how big this boat is. I never realized until I saw it here in Sydney. Everything in Miami is big so it looked normal. I had to post it the old way because the picture thing here is being insanely slow. This Wednesday it'll be back and I'm taking Heather to see it so I'll get some real pictures when I go.

That Was Strange

You Are Likely an Only Child

At your darkest moments, you feel frustrated.
At work and school, you do best when you're organizing.
When you love someone, you tend to worry about them.

In friendship, you are emotional and sympathetic.
Your ideal careers are: radio announcer, finance, teaching, ministry, and management.
You will leave your mark on the world with organizational leadership, maybe as the author of self-help books.

Here's what I saw when I was writing that last entry...Louie stretched out on the bed sounds asleep. He looks like roadkill kitty there... Posted by Picasa

Hurting Babies :(

This week in clinical I got to do a full assessment on a newborn (fifteen minutes old to be exact) She was a cute little thing, third girl in the family. Since they didn't agree on the names yet (I think big sisters are in on this...they're five and three I believe) She was called by her last name for now. I started calling her periwinkle because that's sort of what her last name sounded like (I actually can't remember her real last name, nor would I put it here if I could...) She was nine pounds, perfect little thing (well big)

Something every baby gets when she's born is a 1mg shot of vitamin K. This helps with blood clotting factors and other stuff that escapes my brain at the moment (mental note...look up what else this is for). Since I was doing the assessment I also got to give the needle. It was IM (intramuscular) but of course periwinkle is just a little tot so I had to give it with a teburculin needle...this is about the size of an insulin needle but its in ml's not units. The needle is given in the vastis lateralis which is the middle/inner third of baby's leg. you measure up and down from the knee and greater trochanter, and then the middle third of that again. I felt kind of bad giving the little one this injetion....she gave me this kind of "why would you do that" cry. But it's good for her and she probably doesn't remember it now.

I have a really cute picture of louie but blogger won't let me put it up at the moment so I'm going to do it the old way...it'll be above this entry. This is what I saw when I looked over a few minutes ago.

On onther news, I was voted vice president for the nursing society. I'm really excited for this especially since it means I'll be president next year. Only drawback is I have to mc the end of year banquet...yikes!

First Clinical at Obs.

I decided to blog from here (ms office) so I could change my font…and I’m not posting a picture so it works out okay. My first day at clinical was AMAZING. I love being in OBS and think I will add it to my list of places I might want to work when I become an RN. I got to take an IV out of a person, something that scared me at first when Cyndee said “okay what do you do first” because I didn’t exactly read up on it. But I did it okay anyway even though I had my group watching me. I almost got to do an IM injection on a baby, but Kelly did it. My mother was wonderful too. She did everything by the book and if you told her to do something she’d do it. I was sad to say goodbye to her actually. I got to give a medication and found I was much less worked up about it than when I would do it during intersession. I still had to say the stuff out loud three times…Cyndee puts a lot of trust in us though and let me go in by myself. That kind of scared me…the trust she gave. But it was nice too. I can’t believe how much we are to know this year already…and the fact that I still know it makes me feel better. I can’t wait to do the rest of my rotations.

Third Year Rocks So Far

Well I've only been in third year for a day now, but it was a really good (although long) day. I sat in class from eight thirty to eleven thirty, then went to get changed for research and eat lunch. Get this. I left my shoes in the bathroom when I was getting changed! I only noticed just now...Jenn and I went to get them and they were still there. That was lucky and that's the last time I get changed at school. I'll wear my professional dress to school next time.

Anyway I have Cyndee in clinical for the next six weeks which is nice...I like Cyndee and her marking tends to go along with my work. I get good marks with her. It turned out my client was almost ready to deliver so they said they'd call when she was an hour away so we could watch. Well they called at fiveish and she delivered around six thirty. We watched that one, and then for the next one (yes there were two deliveries) we got to help with things like taking in the scale, and taking mom's bp. It was amazing.

Tomorrow I have to do research and then actually go to the hospital where I get to take care of my client and her baby. I really like this rotation so far.

School? What?

Tomorrow I start back to school in third year. I'm still rather shocked to be going to third year of nursing, and very excited to go back to school. Tuesday I start in obstetrics and I really can't wait. Little babies! Anyway this weekend we went to New Harris to Scott's Cabin to have one last weekend before school started, and we had a blast. We played pictionary and had a good time trying to figure out why Scott drew dice, an egg and a pan for "scramble" (actually he was trying to draw scrable, not yahtzee...got his games mixed up) and why noone could get my eye, dad and hoe for "idahoe" We also went swimming, four wheeling (or "quading" as some say), had a camp fire and relaxed in the hot tub. This morning I sat out back, enjoyed the view and had my coffee.

Up above there's me standing in the middle of a pool created by a waterfall (it's just a trickle right now) and then Chrissy looking down from above and Amanda attempting to be a mountain goat.

These are the chairs I absolutely love. I sat here and drank my coffee this morning. And This is today's view with the sun shining.

Lazy Babies

I was reading in bed last night, and I knew louie was next to me but when my mom came in she found this little rascle had made a little bed on my pillows next to the dresser. Is that not the cutest thing ever? I thought it was.

Louie was looking pretty cute himself all curled up on my bed.

As Summer Comes To A Close...

With only three days until school starts, Amanda, Chrissy and I decided to hit the beach that one last time. That's Chrissy and Amanda there walking up from the beach. The water was absolutely beautiful and the waves were huge...maybe a little too huge...one took me down and slammed me against the sand, leaving me with sand burn and a very sore neck/upper back. It could have been worse and I plan on being much more careful on the waves when they're that big.

On other fun news, I went to the eye doctor today. My right eye is a little weaker but not enough to send in the glasses for new lenses. And she gave me a new type of contacts called Acuvue Advance. They're made of silicone so they don't take as much moisture out of the eyes. I wore them today and they were really comfortable so I'm going to try them again tomorrow and see how they go.

Tomorrow the pup gets her haircut. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go long or not.

Running For The Cure

So I set up the account on the cibc website for the CBU Nursing Society team for Run for the Cure. I was waiting for school to start so I could bring it up at a meeting, but then found out I have to register by the sixteenth...next friday! So I emailed Clare (a prof, and the society advisor) and she said go for it. I now have to get people to join and donations for myself.

Want to donate? you can go here to do it. This is the message in the email I'm going to send out to people as well:

I am participating in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run forthe Cure, on Sunday, October 2, 2005, and I am asking for your support.I am one of more than 170,000 participants who will all be walking orrunning on October 2. The money I raise will go to fund breast cancerresearch, education and awareness programs across the country.I need your support because with it, the Foundation can continue to fundthe research and programs that are helping improve the quality of life forfamilies touched by breast cancer.Donating online is quick, easy and secure! You can pay by VISA,MasterCard or American Express. Within 20 minutes, you will receive a taxreceipt for any donation that has been successfully received.

My next step will be to ask people from around here, and get my mom to ask people from work too. Wish me luck!

Posting From Word

I just found out I can now blog from word and then put it on the internet from here. I’m not sure how this is going to turn out (if the font will change or not) so I thought I’d give it a try…I want to see if I can put a picture on from here too…Okay so it doesn’t support the picture. I don’t know that I’ll be using this very much.

Goodbye New Orleans, Hello Miami

So I'm sure all of you have been keeping up with the hurricane news in New Orleans. If you live under such a rock and have not heard about it (how do you get internet btw?) you can go here to get the latest. Anyway what does this mean for me? My cruise was scheduled to leave out of New Orleans. Humph. So we had to pick a new cruise. It's basically going to the same places, but it's on a different boat and leaves from Miami instead. Which is kind of okay because I like Miami and wouldn't mind going back there. Anyway you can go here to check out my boat and stuff. We're going on the western caribbean leaving Miami. Should be fun all the same.

There's a strange noise coming from the corner of my room. I think a bird got stuck somewhere and is now around that area. It's annoying me.
