Health Promotion Clinic and Skiing

Yesterday I went to a health promotion clinic and then went skiing. The health clinic went really well, with a lot of people coming to get their cholesterol, BP and Sugar checked. Skiing was awesome...there's no other word for how good it was. Considering the weather has been so crappy lately it was nice to get up and get as much skiing in as we did (four thirty till close...we were the last two on the hill!)

Mental Health Update

Well I finally went to the floor for mental health, and I have to say it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was. I was on 1D and my client was bipolar. She was having a hard day, but I think most of that was because she didn't sleep all night. She didn't sleep much all day either so hopefully she got some zzzzz's tuesday night. Next week I'm on 1C and looking forward to it...it sounds like an interesting floor.

Today is the health fair at the mall...we're going to take blood pressure, check sugar and cholesterol levels and give out information. This went really well last year so I hope this year is the same. I'll post some pictures later.

Cruise Fever

That's what we all have. According to the carnival website we only have 33 days left until the cruise! According to my own way of counting it there are four clinicals left (Not counting the one I have tomorrow) Yikes!

Mental health rotation is going well. Last week I was in addiction services which was very interesting, and this week I'm at Crossroads which I think I talked about a few posts back. I enjoyed that today as well and am looking forward to going tomorrow. Then I'm on the floor for three weeks which should be very intersting as well. They use safety needles there and I'm hoping to get to see one.

Pics From School

Clare just sent me some pics from the nursing society meeting and a nice one she took of Mary and I in the offices (we seem to often find ourselves the subject of pictures in the offices...If we get one next year I'm going to put them in cronological order and send them to Mary when we both retire) Anyway the pictures turned out really well even though one of them was what I call a "natural picture" so none of us were smiling. I never like the way I look in those pictures. I also couldn't fix the redeye because I'm on the laptop and don't have a program to do this with. I should really put my olympus program on here.

First Week Back

So technically I've been back to school for a week, although it started Tuesday and ended today. The majority of my week was spent doing stuff for Mental health, which is my first clinical rotation. We did our CPI recert, which stands for Crisis Prevention and Intervention. It's interesting. I didn't really buy into it the first time I took it because it seems to easy, but I actually used the wrist grab exit one day at work. The resident wasn't being violent, she just likes to grab things and her grip is hard to break. Tuesday afternoon some people from Crossroads came to talk to us. I'd never heard of this until now. Crossroads is a part of Clubhouse, which is a program for Mental Health Consumers who are unable to be fully controled by medication, and have a hard time integrating back into the community. It gives them a chance to gain social skills and work in different jobs around the community for minimum wadge. One of the guys there told us when he first went to crossroads he couldn't imagine speaking in front of a groub, yet there he was helping to give the presentation.

I was worried about Mental Health rotation when I first started the year, but now I'm getting excited about it. It's a different thing for me...Obs wasn't scary because I've been around babies and MedSurg was the same as intersession. Mental Health is new. We already learned a lot in the first class. This coming week I go to detox which I think is going to be interesting as well. The rest of the "week" went fine, today was the same as it's always been...long...0830 to 1430...yikes! On monday I'll have my first Pediactric class and I can't wait.
